Mayor of Northampton Tests Positive for COVID-19

Today Mayor David J. Narkewicz of Northampton announced that he has tested positive for COVID-19. The Mayor is in isolation at home and continuing to work remotely, where he hopes to make a full recovery from the virus.

Mayor Narkewicz began experiencing cold and flu-like symptoms on Monday, March 23, 2020 and his symptoms worsened overnight into Tuesday. In consultation with the Public Health Director and Public Health Nurse it was recommended he be tested due to a contact investigation that revealed possible exposures. This morning, Dr. Joanne Levin, Medical Director of Infection Prevention at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, contacted the Mayor to inform him that his COVID-19 test was positive. The precise source of the Mayor’s exposure remains under investigation by the Northampton Health Department.

Mayor Narkewicz is resting comfortably at home and is in strict isolation from his wife and youngest daughter, who are both non-symptomatic and are now both in home quarantine for 14 days. The Mayor remains in constant communication with the members of his public health emergency management team and his condition is being closely monitored by the city’s Public Health Department. He is continuing to carry out the duties of his office while allowing himself time for rest and recovery.

On Friday, March 13, 2020, Mayor Narkewicz ordered that all municipal buildings and facilities be closed to the public beginning on Monday, March 16, 2020. On Tuesday, March 17, following his declaration of a local state of emergency,  all non-essential city employees began working from home to the extent possible. The Mayor continued to work in his City Hall office until Friday, March 20, 2020, practicing all recommended social distancing and hygiene protocols and holding daily meetings with his public health emergency team via teleconference.

Mayor Narkewicz urges all residents of Northampton to take care of themselves and their families by sheltering at home to the fullest extent possible, minimizing contact with others through social distancing, and continuing to follow strict hygiene practices like regular hand washing for a minimum of twenty seconds and sanitizing frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs and counters.
