Winter Snow Tips

* Before shoveling the end of your driveway, if possible, wait until the street is plowed. Most roads are pushed back 3 or 4 times before the plow trucks have completed their routes.

* If the weather is calling for snow turning to freezing rain, try to wait and shovel your driveway after the freezing rain stops. This will help in keeping your driveway from turning to all ice.

* Winter sand for residents is available at the DPW yard, 125 Locust Street, and at the landfill (working hours only.)

* When plowing or snow blowing your driveway, please do not put the snow into or across the road. It’s against the City Ordinance to do so because it will most likely freeze and cause ice ruts, making driving dangerous for everyone, including the plow drivers.

* Please remember that it is not uncommon to see a sand truck or snow plow go by your house many times during a storm. Plows going to the outlying routes have to get there somehow. The storm will dictate how many times we sand or plow a street.

* Please do not pass a plow or sander and keep back a safe distance. Remember that the plow or sander is there to make the roads safe.

* It is difficult during the snow storms for snow plow drivers to determine the exact center of the road so one side of the street may end up with a little more snow than the other side. Drivers don’t do this on purpose. Remember that the drivers will work long, often dark hours during a storm.

* If possible, please shovel the fire hydrant near your home as well as any storm drain grates. If rain follows the snow, street flooding and icing can quickly become a problem. Thank you.

* Please do not plant trees or shrubs, or place rocks too close to the edge of the road. This makes them subject to accidental damage by the sanders and snow plows. Drain spouts and drain pipes are not allowed to drain onto City ways.

Thank you!
