The Northampton Water Division (NWD) is a municipally owned and operated public water utility system that is regulated by Federal and State drinking water laws. Its infrastructure is generally made up of our watershed, wells, reservoirs, 150 miles of water pipe (some over 100 years old), 1000 water valves, 1200 fire hydrants and 8000 water meters, which are visited and read regularly.
We are currently in the construction phase of our new water filtration plant and expect operations to commence in Fall 2007.
In addition to supplying our drinking water, the NWD maintains City-wide fire protection standards, responds to emergencies (like water main breaks), and does everything possible to meet mandated water-testing standards. In order to provide these services, it conducts ongoing programs to test, maintain, repair, replace and improve the system.
The DPW is a member of two community based committees for the protection of watersheds and source supplies.
