GPS is the USA's part of a global navigation and positioning system that allows the DPW to find and document infrastructure around Northampton and its watersheds. This information is used to make engineering plans and expand the inventory and accuracy of our GIS system.
We use three accuracy grades of GPS: WAAS, Sub-meter and Centimeter. A partnership between the DPW, Smith College and the National Geodetic Survey provides public access to continuous, extremely accurate post-processing data.
