As expressed in the Sustainable Northampton Comprehensive Plan Northampton is committed to:

"Significantly improve energy efficiency in city buildings and programs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and encourage conservation and use of alternative and renewable energy sources throughout the community”
-- Guiding Principal; Sustainable Northampton, January 2008

Housed in Northampton Central Services, the Energy and Sustainability Office works to move Northampton toward more sustainable use of energy and significantly reduce the community’s greenhouse gas emissions in order to:

  • Protect Northampton from rising and unstable energy costs
  • Decelerate our impact on global warming
  • Improve our air quality and public health
  • Reduce the risks associated with Northampton's dependence on foreign sources of energy
  • Reduce the risks associated with dependance on diminishing energy resources
