Stretch Code Workshop

Information on the Optional “Stretch” Energy Efficiency Building Code

Was held on March 16, 2010

In January 2010, Massachusetts adopted higher-level energy efficient building techniques into the MA Building Code, according to MA Green Communities Act requirements. At the same time, cities and towns were given the option of adopting an even tighter energy efficiency code known as the “Stretch Code.”

Communities that adopt the Stretch Code will:

  • Be eligible to apply for state Green Communities Grants from an annual $10 million fund;
  • Trim energy use;
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Be recognized as leaders in sustainability.

On March 16, a packed audience discussed what adoption of the Stretch Code would mean for our community.

Presenters covered:

  • benefits to the City (i.e., grant opportunities)
  • how adopting the Stretch Code would address actions outlined in the Sustainable Northampton Comprehensive Plan
  • how efficiency is measured in a new home
  • the impact on renovations (minimal to none), additions (more efficient but similar to standard code), and new buildings (home must be tested to ensure efficiency levels are met)
  • the impact on commercial construction
  • anticipated construction costs and savings in energy bills
  • availability of mortgages that take into account reduced energy costs to increase size of loan, and
  • next steps the City must take toward a vote to adopt.

    The City Council is expected to host a public hearing on the stretch code in early April.

Jim Barry, Regional Coordinator, Department of Energy Resources (DOER)
