Bridge Design Hearing

The Mass Highway Department is holding a Design Public Hearing to discuss the proposed River Road over Mill River bridge replacement project in Northampton.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed River Road over Mill River replacement bridge project. All views and comments made at the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

The proposed project consists of replacing the existing two-span structurally deficient concrete arch bridge with a new single-span prestressed concrete beam bridge on the same general alignment. The work will extend approximately 300 feet south of the bridge and 200 feet north of the bridge. This approach roadway work will consist of reconstruction of the existing pavement, minor vertical & horizontal alignment, and safety improvements such as guardrail transitoin to the bridge, pavement markings and signage. The project will be constructed in one phase using a complete roadway closure with detour around the project site.

A secure right-of-way is necessary for this project. Mass Highway's policy concerning land acquisitions will be discussed at this hearing.

Written views received up to five days before the hearing will be displayed for public inspection. Plans will be on display starting at 6:30 p.m. A project hand out is available on the Mass Highway website: www.mass.gov/mhd (project file 603729).
