First Night Northampton
First Night 2009 Poster by Alexis Nuebert
This year's poster artist is Alexis Neubert, local graphic designer and owner of her own firm, Alexis Design, on Strong Avenue in Northampton.
Says Alexis: "While developing the artwork for First Night 2009, I was inspired by a friend's photographs of Northampton. Candace Hope had done a series of panoramic shots that encompassed full city blocks, and I wanted to show as much of downtown Northampton as possible.
"I decided to focus on the 'landmark' sights, shots that felt 'iconic' as New Years Eve is such a culturally iconic event all over the world. The next challenge was figuring out how to use these photos in an original and festive way.
"I was drawn to the disco ball idea because it implies both night and celebration. The panoramic photos already had a natural curve to them so they looked organic when transposed on a sphere.
This global concept got a final nod of approval when my two-year-old stood in the Center for the Arts ballroom and pointed out, with delight, that there was a shiny silver disco ball hanging from the ceiling."
