West Side Story at the Academy of Music

PACE's community theater production of West Side Story is like nothing you have seen before. The writers of West Side Story framed the modern day issues of 1950's America in that classic production, drawing on the timeless tale used by Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet and by many other writers throughout the ages. The story stands, but by presenting it as a 1950s period piece, we risk distancing ourselves from the issues it brings up for us today. The classic play lends itself, with some updating, to our current national debate on immigration. This is the interpretation that will be presented by PACE. The cast of PACE's production is a true mix of cultures, races and ethnicities. Performers and crew are drawn from Springfield, Holyoke, Easthampton, Westhampton, Southampton, Northampton, UMass, Hatfield, Chicopee, Belchertown, South Hadley, Hadley and other communities from throughout the Valley. Nationals of Haiti, Puerto Rico, Spain, and more have joined the cast with the promise of a new take on the classic show. The production has all-new choreography and draws on dance traditions seldom seen on the theatrical stage such as hip-hop, break dancing, West African dance, martial arts and capoeira.
