LANDFILL GATEKEEPERS
· Intermittent Positions (10-19 hrs/wk)
· Hourly Wage: $10.61

Definition:
Provides oversight and operates the City’s solid waste and recycling transfer stations; all other related work as required.

Essential Functions:
Open and closes locks, gates, doors, and enclosures at the beginning and end of the day. Sells vehicle permits and refuse disposal stickers. Estimates volumes, computes charges, collects fees, makes changes, and fills out record-keeping forms. Explains solid waste and recycling disposal programs, policies, procedures and regulations to the general public. Directs the general public to the appropriate receptacles for waste and recyclable materials.

Enforces policies, procedures and regulations by watching the activities of persons using the drop-off areas and intervening as necessary. Monitors refuse being deposited to insure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Performs spot-checks of refuse to prevent unauthorized disposal of hazardous wastes or recyclables. Operates hydraulic refuse compactor(s). Uses hand tools. Insures that the transfer station area is maintained in a neat and orderly manner. Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates.

Education and Experience:
Ability to read, write and follow directions. Understands basic math. Ability to quickly and accurately estimate volumes and compute charges. Ability to handle money, make change, and complete record keeping forms. Experience in transfer station, drop-off center, landfill operations or related activities useful; or any equivalent combination of activities, education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill :
Ability to communicate with the public effectively and tactfully. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public. Ability to carry out instructions and to work independently. Ability to interpret and enforce solid waste and recycling policies, procedures and regulations. General knowledge of transfer station procedures and operations. Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.

Physical Requirements:
Moderate physical effort generally required. Required to walk and stand for long periods of time during work shift. Gatekeepers are often required to lift weight greater than 40 pounds. Ability to manipulate and work with power and hand tools. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
