PRINCIPAL - BRIDGE STREET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

DEFINITION:
The Principal is the educational leader of his/her building, operating under the supervision of the Superintendent of Schools and in harmony with the policies of the School Committee and the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Using effective leadership, supervisory and administrative skills, the Principal shall promote the best educational development of each student and the professional development of each teacher in the building.

SUPERVISION
The Elementary School Principal reports to the Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Is responsible for the hiring, supervision, direction and evaluation of all personnel and educational programs within his/her school and is sensitive to their effect on the emotional, social, civic as well as intellectual development of the students. Responsible for the implementation and observance of all School Committee policies and regulations by the school’s staff and students.

Assists in the development, revisions and evaluations of the curriculum. Responsible for the safety, management and administration of the school plant. Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the Principal. Budgets school time to provide for the efficient conduct of the school’s instruction and business.

Plans and supervises the school safety plan, fire drills, and emergency preparedness program.
Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according due process to the rights of students on school property and school buses.

Supervises the preparation of all school reports for the district office and Department of Education. Responsible for the attendance, progress, conduct, health and maintenance of accurate records for students. Responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the school budget.

Acts as liaison between the school and the community, interpreting activities and policies of the school and encouraging community participation in school life. Serves as co-chair of local school council.

Makes arrangements for special conferences between parents and teachers. Conduct meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.

Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities from time to time as warranted or directed by the Superintendent

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree or equivalent. Valid state certificate to practice as an elementary school principal; appropriate experience in public school administration and supervision; appropriate experience as a teacher.
