Drought Requires Water Conservation

Mon., Nov 5

The New England Region is experiencing a severe drought. Over the past four months, the area has received precipitation well below normal. The National Weather Service predicts that the present weather patterns will remain unchanged in the foreseeable future. It is a matter that the Northampton Department of Public Works (DPW) takes seriously.

The majority of Northampton's water comes from reservoirs, which rely on rain to feed the streams that keep the reservoirs filled. Unfortunately, Northampton has not been spared from the effects of the drought. At present, the level of Northampton's largest reservoir is almost 10 feet below the spillway. This means that the reservoir is at approximately two-thirds capacity.

The DPW is concerned that if similar weather patterns persist, adequate water supplies will not be available and the City may be forced to impose mandatory water restrictions under Chapter 325 that was approved by City Council during the drought of 2002.

Before we reach the critical stage of mandatory water restrictions, the DPW is asking you, our water consumers, to look for ways to conserve this valuable resource. Please refrain from watering your lawn, washing your car, or any other unnecessary water usage. If you have any specific questions, call 413-587-1570 and the DPW will assist you in any way possible.

Please visit http://www.mass.gov/dep/water/resources/watercon.htm for water conservation and other information.

With a concerted effort from both the DPW and you, our valued customers, we can help insure a sufficient water supply for the months to come. Above all, please remember that water is a limited and precious resource.

Please Conserve!
