Let's Talk about Design and Density
- Density Study Poster A 11" x 17" sampler of Northampton existing density conditions (300k)
- Northampton Density Samples Samples of Northampton development at different densities (2.2 meg)
- Norfolk Pattern Book An example of what a community can do to help define and preserve its neighborhoods. New development is expected to "fit-in" with existing neighborhoods.
One of the ways to accomplish sustainable development is to increase the density, i.e. build more buildings, in existing neighborhoods, including the downtown. Offered here are models that were created for design competitions in Portland, Oregon and in Santa Cruz, California. The designs are not necessarily appropriate for Northampton, but are presented to assist in visualizing what residential "in-fill" might look like. In-fill is a term used for inserting buildings into areas that are already developed
- Single Family Home on narrow lot Design option for a single-family home with a garage on a narrow lot in a dense neighborhood. Design could be scaled up for a wider lot. (Design by Vargas Greenan Architects, used with permission.)
- Single Family Home with garage on narrow lot Design option for single-family home with a garage on a narrow lot in a dense neighborhood. Design could be scaled up for a wider lot. (Design by Bryan Higgins, photography by Charles Miller, Fine Homebuilding. Used with permission.)
- Santa Cruz Accessory Dwelling Unit program Design options for accessory dwelling units in single family homes
- Small House Cottage Design Options for small home development to provide less consumptive housing on smaller lots
