Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification

"Facilitate the development and construction of 'green' [e.g. LEED™ certified] new municipal buildings with the goal that all new significant municipal buildings include these criteria."
Sustainable Northampton Comprehensive Plan, January 2008
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.
Administered by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED Certification is the recognized standard for energy efficient building design and construction throughout the world. The City's new Senior Center was the first Northampton municipal building constructed to these standards. The Police Station project has been registered with USGBC to be Northampton's second LEED certified municipal building.
The Committee has retained the services of Enermodal Engineering of Ontario, Canada to provide sustainable design and LEED certification support to our project design team at Ciaolo & Bieniek. Enermodal brings experience working on some 150 LEED projects including several police and emergency services facilities.
Enermodal's preliminary work on the project indicates that the new Northampton Police Station has the potential for achieving a LEED Gold certification. A copy of their sustainable design concept brief to the Committee is downloadable below:
