After School Ski Program

This popular program offers a fantastic downhill ski opportunity to youth in grades 2 - 8 at a reasonable price. Participants will enjoy up to three hours of skiing one afternoon a week for five consecutive weeks. The program is held at Berkshire East Ski Resort in Charlemont, MA.
Berkshire East offers 32 diverse trails which both accommodate beginners and can challenge expert skiers. 10 trails are lit for night skiing. Questions? Call the Recreation Dept. at 587-1040.

Deadline to register is December 10th or when the program reaches capacity.

Grades 6 - 8 Tuesdays
Grades 2 - 5 Thursdays

FEES:
Basic Package: $235, lift, transportation and supervision
Ski Lessons: $60 for 5 weeks
Ski Rentals: $65 for 5 weeks (scroll down for rental form procedure)
Snow board Rentals: $86 for 5 weeks (scroll down for rental form procedure)
Snow board Lessons: $86 for 5 weeks

Ski & Snowboard Rental Procedure

New this year Berkshire East is having everyone who needs rentals for the Northampton Recreation Department’s after school ski program, fill out the form online.

Each student who needs to rent either snowboard or ski equipment, must go to www.berkshireeast.com/programs and
scroll down to the bottom where it says online rental form - for parents. Click on that link and complete all the necessary information.

After completing this form you will receive a confirmation e-mail. Please print, sign, and submit it to the Recreation Department as soon as possible. You can mail, email or fax us these forms.

Again, this is a new system set up by Berkshire east to ensure that they have all the proper equipment ready for each group as they arrive to the mountain. If you do not complete the above steps you will not be able to rent any equipment.

Ski Program Details

**Helmets are required**

Middle School students will ski on Tuesdays, January 10th - February 7th.
Coach busses will depart approximately at 2:40pm from J.F.K. Middle School. All students return to J.F.K. at approximately 8:00pm each date.

Elementary students will ski on Thursdays, January 12th - February 9th.
Elementary students depart at approximately 3:00pm from each school.

All participants will return to the school from which they departed at approximately 8:00pm. (Details for each school pick-up will be given before start of program)

Transportation/ Food- Coach busses with restrooms are used for transportation. Skiers may bring food and a full food service is available at the ski lodge. Backpacks etc. may be left on board during the ski program.

Lessons- Lessons take place shortly after arrival and are group lessons which last one hour.
All beginners are required to take a lesson. Tuesday lessons will be at 4:30pm and Thursday lessons will be 5:30pm.

Chaperones– Chaperones are asked to commit to all five dates and will be contacted; chaperones from last year have priority. (See Chaperone Responsibility List.) There will be a mandatory chaperone meeting on Monday evening, January 9, 2012. Each Chaperone is assigned skiers and will ski and take lessons with beginners. More advanced skiers can check in with chaperones during the session. Chaperones ski for free.

Rental equipment is $65 for skiers and $86 for snowboarders for the five weeks. Non skiing chaperones are welcome to assist onboard the busses and in the lodge!

Ski Cancellations- will be announced on our Hotline number 587-1044, on the Recreation Department’s website, www.northamptonma.gov/recreation and at the schools.
Make-ups– will happen if we have inclement weather. These dates are added at the end of the program, if needed starting the week of February 13th.

Registrations- are currently being accepted for the After School Ski /Snowboard Program at the Recreation Department, 90 Locust Street, weekdays from 8:30am- 4:30pm. Call 587-1040 for further information. A limited number of scholarships are available to those who qualify. Applications are due on Friday, November 18, 2011.
