The City of Northampton's Tree Warden and Urban Forestry Commission, in partnership with Tree Northampton, Inc., encourages neighbors to organize themselves and submit an application for a tree planting project, of at least 10 trees, in their neighborhood. Groups whose applications are accepted will work with Northampton’s Tree Warden to select trees, do site preparation, and plant trees at sites in their neighborhood.
What the City of Northampton and/or Tree Northampton will provide:
- Consultation and guidance to select appropriate trees
- Trees - when planted within the tree belt or on private property (setback tree) will become public shade trees in perpetuity, protected under MA General Law 87)
- Mulch
- Water
- Planting tools
- Assistance and expert guidance on planting day from the Tree Warden and at least one other professional
- Pruning of young trees as needed
The neighborhood is expected to commit to specific tasks on planting day and to diligent watering of trees for the first two years after planting. The more tasks your group can commit to, the stronger your application.
Applications are accepted year-round; however, only those applications received by JANUARY 1ST are considered for the following fall (October-December) planting season.
