[ARCHIVED] Construction for the Week of May 29th

Highway Division Updates

  • Last week, the Highway Division:
    • Repaired potholes on Dunphy Drive, Florence Road, Michelman Avenue, Ryan Road and Service Center Road
    • Installed, repaired and/or replaced signs on Bancroft Road, Black Birch Trail, Claire Avenue, Cooke Avenue, Crescent Street, Edwards Square, Emily Lane, Fruit Street, Henshaw Avenue, MaryJane Lane, New South Street, Pine Brook Curve, Pines Edge Drive, Rockland Heights Road, Round Hill Road and Stonewall Drive
    • Installed pedestrian paddles on Main Street, Prospect Street and West Street
    • Patched trench cuts on Arch Street and Riverside Drive
    • Continued installation of outdoor dining spaces on downtown streets
    • Prepared for kickoff of the third annual Summer on Strong
  • Annual street sweeping operations have begun in Ward 3; schedule TBD
  • To report a pothole, please submit a request via the Pothole Repair Form; the largest potholes are filled first to alleviate hazards to vehicles; as hazards arise and are identified, they will be addressed

Bridge Street School Safe Routes to School

  • MassDOT has contracted with Gomes Construction Company, Inc. to complete improvements that will enhance pedestrian safety near Bridge Street School
  • The project will upgrade sidewalks, curbing and accessible ramps on Parsons Street and portions of Hawley Street; upgrade the pedestrian crossing on Bridge Street near Parsons Street including RRFBs; and reconstruct the intersection of Pomeroy Terrace with Bridge Street to install a raised crosswalk and to improve drainage
  • The project is scheduled to be complete in Summer 2023
  • The Contractor has demobilized and will remobilize in late June, after school is out, to complete the project
  • On-street parking prohibitions have been removed until the Contractor returns in late June to complete the project

Damon Road Reconstruction

  • MassDOT has contracted with Gagliarducci Construction, Inc. to reconstruct Damon Road from the bike path to just beyond the intersection with King Street, North King Street and Bridge Road
  • The project will provide intersection and traffic signal improvements, extended sidewalks, a shared use path and other safety improvements
  • The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023
  • There will be no work on Memorial Day
  • The Contractor will be installing new water main at the intersection of King Street and Damon Road and granite curbing on the easterly end of Damon Road this week
  • Motorists should expect delays with traffic shifts at the intersection and alternating one-way traffic for curb installation
  • Questions about the project should be directed to MassDOT District 2, project #608236

Dryads Green Extension Drainage & Slope Improvements

  • The City has contracted with GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. to prepare design, permitting and contract documents for drainage and slope improvements from the end of Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River
  • The project is currently out to bid and construction is anticipated to begin Summer 2023
  • The City contracted with Geeleher Enterprises, Inc. in 2021 to perform emergency work to stabilize the slope southwest of Dryads Green Extension in order to protect a nearby sewer system
  • The DPW periodically inspects this area to confirm site stability
  • The path from Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River remains closed until further notice

I-91 Bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road

  • MassDOT has contracted with J.F. White, Inc. to construct roadway improvements to I-91 and at Exit 23 (formerly Exit 18)
  • The project will replace the I-91 bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road and construct safety and signal improvements at the exit interchange
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in phases by 2025
  • There will be no work on Memorial Day
  • I-91 southbound, no traffic impacts are anticipated this week
  • I-91 northbound, right lane closure Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m
  • Route 5, lane shifts as needed Tuesday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for traffic signal work; police details will assist with traffic control
  • Hockanum Road, guardrail work Thursday and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., no lane closures or detours anticipated

Leeds Pressure Reducing Valve

  • The City has contracted with GEG Construction for water system improvements that include an above grade pressure reducing valve (PRV) connected to the 36-inch transmission main in Haydenville Road across from Scotti’s
  • The project will allow for the eventual demolition of the Audubon Road water storage tank
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2023
  • Final site work may continue this week

Levee Toe Drain Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Ludlow Construction Co., Inc. for the installation of manholes along the land side of both the Connecticut and Mill River levee systems
  • The project involves the installation of 28 new manholes and inspection of the toe drains running parallel to the levees via CCTV
  • Manhole installations and pipe inspections via CCTV are complete
  • A pipe repair adjacent to Venturers Field Road and final loam & seed restoration will occur in Spring 2023

Levee Vegetation Management

  • The City has contracted with Cain’s Mechanical LLC for vegetation management at various locations throughout the levee and flood control system on both the Connecticut and Mill Rivers
  • Work to mechanically remove unwanted woody growth and fallen trees and localized placement of rip rap for slope stabilization will be undertaken periodically system wide throughout the growing season
  • There will be no work on Memorial Day
  • The Contractor will be removing woody vegetation along riprap slopes of the Mill River Diversion Channel this week

Main Street, Florence Streetscape Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Gomes Construction Co., Inc. for streetscape improvements along Main Street in Florence from Maple Street to South Main Street
  • The project includes targeted sidewalk replacement, compliant accessible curb ramps, curb realignment at South Main Street, tree pits and street furniture
  • The project is complete with the exception of line painting and the installation of flexible porous pavement scheduled for Spring 2023
  • Questions about the project should be directed to the Planning & Sustainability Department

Manhan Rail Trail Retaining Wall

  • The City has contracted with Clayton D. Davenport Trucking, Inc. to construct a supplemental retaining wall on the Manhan Rail Trail near Veterans Field off West Street
  • The project includes constructing a gabion basket rock wall to buttress the existing stone retaining wall and filling an abandoned brick sewer with flowable fill to provide a sufficient foundation for the new wall
  • Construction is scheduled to be completed in late Spring 2023
  • There will be no work on Memorial Day
  • The Contractor will finish constructing the retaining wall and do final cleanup this week 
  • The rail trail will be closed during construction work hours, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a detour (pdf) in place
  • Questions about the project should be directed to the Planning & Sustainability Department

Winter Street Reconstruction

  • The City has contracted with Caracas Construction Corporation for the full depth reconstruction of Winter Street, including water & sewer mains and service connections and sidewalks
  • Construction is scheduled to be complete by Fall 2023
  • There will be no work on Memorial Day
  • The Contractor will be constructing new sidewalks, driveway aprons and accessible ramps this week
