City of Northampton Transfer Station Fee and Schedule Changes

There will be changes at City Transfer Stations affecting the procedure for the purchase of permits, hours of operation, bulky and leaf/yard waste disposal and materials acceptable for recycling.

  • 2020-2021 Transfer Station permits must be purchased online. Permits for the next fiscal year (7/1/2020-6/30/2021) must be purchased through the City website (northamptonma.gov/reduce-waste) beginning June 1, 2020.  Payments must be made via electronic check or a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover credit card. The fee for a 2020-2021 Transfer Station permit is $45.00. Second stickers for a single household will be available for $10.00 each. There are no changes to the needs-based discounted permit program. If you have questions about purchasing a permit or need assistance, please call 413-587-1570 x 4306.

  • Operating hours will change for both City Transfer Stations: Effective July 1, 2020, the Locust Street Transfer Station (125 Locust Street) will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7:00 am-3:45 pm.  Effective June 13, 2020, select areas of the Glendale Road Transfer Station (170 Glendale Road) will be open Saturdays, by appointment only. Permit holders must complete an online appointment request form.

    • Collection of bulky waste (e.g. furniture, construction/demolition debris, etc.) at the Glendale Road Transfer Station’s Main Gate will occur between 7:00 am and 11:45 am on the first and third Saturday of each month by appointment only.  Disposal fees must be paid in advance.  Additional details about the new procedure and access to the online appointment request form are available at northamptonma.gov/reduce-waste.

    • Collection of leaf and yard waste will occur at the Glendale Road Transfer Station’s Gate 2 on the second and fourth Saturday of the month between 7:00 am and 3:45 pm by appointment only. Additional details about the new procedure and access to the online appointment request form are available at northamptonma.gov/reduce-waste.

    • The ReCenter Swap Shop will not open for the 2020 season.

  • The City’s recycling disposal contract requires changes to materials collected for recycling.  Clear drink cups (straws and lids removed) and clear egg cartons are now welcome in the household container recycling mix, although only crystal-clear versions of both items are considered acceptable.  Colored, opaque and Styrofoam items should be placed in the trash. As of July 1, 2020, aerosol cans and shredded paper are no longer acceptable in the recycling stream and should be placed in your household trash.

Please call the Department of Public Works at 413-587-1570 with any questions.
