[ARCHIVED] Construction for the Week of October 5th

Highway Division Updates

  • Last week, the Highway Division:
    • Sealed pavement on Cross Path Road, Loudville Road, Old Ferry Road and Smith Street
    • Sealed manhole covers and catch basins on Carlon Drive, Liberty Street, Warner Street and Willow Street
    • Installed manhole cover risers on Hatfield Street, Warner Street and Willow Street
    • Rebuilt catch basins on Harlow Avenue, Stilson Avenue and Woods Road
    • Performed site work to improve visibility at intersection of Burts Pit Road Extension and Ryan Road
    • Did asphalt and crack sealing work at Northampton Fire Rescue Headquarters
  • Street sweeping in Ward 2 will begin soon
  • To report a pothole, please submit a request via the Pothole Repair Form; the largest potholes are filled first to alleviate hazards to vehicles; as hazards arise and are identified, they will be addressed.

Bratton Court Sewer Reconstruction

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises, Inc. for the reconstruction of approximately 300 linear feet of new sewer main, installation of four new sewer manholes and the reconnection of sewer services along Bratton Court in Florence
  • This project is part of the City’s continuing effort to improve and update municipal infrastructure
  • Work on the new sewer main was completed in late July
  • Repaving was completed on Friday, September 18th; final clean-up will occur in October

Hospital Hill Drainage, Route 66 (Prince Street)

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises, Inc. for the installation of subdrain to address a drainage issue in the roadway
  • This project is part of the City's continuing effort to improve and update municipal infrastructure
  • Work is planned for this week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (October 7th - 9th); Officers will be on-site to direct traffic, but expect minor delays and seek alternate routes if possible

North Farms Road & North Maple Street Paving Project

  • The City has contracted with Palmer Paving Corp for pavement reclamation on North Farms Road, from the Williamsburg Town line to the intersection with North Maple & Mountain Streets, and North Maple Street, from Mountain Street to Bridge Road
  • The project will also include the following features:
    • Roadway drainage improvements on North Farms Road in the vicinity of Country Way
    • Repaving the walking path into the Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area
    • Extending the North Maple Street sidewalk to provide continuous sidewalk from Bridge Road to Mountain Street
    • Radar speed signs at strategic locations on North Farms Road
    • A new crosswalk on Bridge Road connecting the Mountain Street sidewalk to the sidewalk along the south side of Bridge Road; this includes the installation of two rectangular rapid flashing beacons that will alert vehicles traveling on Bridge Road that pedestrians are crossing
  • Pavement reclamation will begin on Monday, October 5th or Tuesday, October 6th and will continue for 3 to 5 days; Officers will be on-site to direct traffic, but expect longer than usual delays on North Farms Road and seek alternate routes if possible

Pine Street Bridge Repairs

  • The City has contracted with Kodiak Corporation for the project which will include structural repairs to the west end of the bridge
  • Most of the work will be below the bridge deck; some traffic delays may occur
  • The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of October
  • Work this week will continue on cleaning and painting and will include the installation of steel reinforcing plates
  • Installation of a new expansion joint may begin towards the end of this week and will occur within the travel lanes; Officers will be on-site to direct traffic, but expect minor delays and seek alternate routes if possible

Crack Sealing

  • The City has contracted with Indus Inc. for crack sealing various streets throughout the City
  • Work will be completed this fall with the schedule TBD

Pavement Markings

  • The City has contracted with Markings, Inc. to repaint pavement markings across the City
  • The project includes painting double yellow centerlines, white lines, speed hump markings, railroad markings, lane arrows and crosswalks
  • Work will be completed this fall with the schedule TBD
  • Work will be restricted to overnight hours

Edwards Square Bike Ramp

  • The City has contracted with Davenport Trucking to install a paved access ramp from Edwards Square (off North Street) to the bike path
  • Work will begin this week and be complete by the end of the construction season
  • Questions about the project should be directed to Wayne Feiden in the Office Planning & Sustainability

Bridge Street, Damon Road, Interstate 91 - Exit 19

  • MassDOT has contracted with Baltazar Contractors, Inc. to construct a roundabout and associated improvements to the Interstate 91 - Exit 19 interchange at the base of the Coolidge Bridge
  • The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2021
  • Temporary line striping defining the completed roundabout layout is in place
  • Slight lane shifts will be required for curb and sidewalk placement and structure adjustments
  • Final paving of the roundabout will occur in Spring 2021
  • Questions about the project should be directed to MassDOT District 2

North Main Street, Route 9, VAMC Water Service

  • VAMC has contracted for extensive work on its campus infrastructure, including replacing a service connection to the City’s water main in North Main Street
  • Work is anticipated to be complete within the next few weeks
  • Steel plates will be used to cover the trench after work hours
  • Two-way traffic will be maintained, but motorists should anticipate delays
  • Questions about the water connection project should be directed to VAMC
